Devin

Cognition's software engineering agent for planning and executing reviewable coding tasks with an editor, shell, browser, and controlled development environment.

Editorially reviewedVerified 2026-08-112 official or primary sources

What it is

Devin is a coding agent designed to work through software tasks using development tools and a reviewable workspace. Official documentation describes task delegation, repository work, terminal and browser use, and collaboration with human developers.

Evaluate it on bounded repository tasks with tests and acceptance criteria. Inspect the plan, diffs, commands, network access, secrets boundary, test evidence, review burden, and recovery from a deliberately ambiguous or failing task.

Worth evaluating for

  • Bounded engineering tasks with automated tests and code review
  • Repository maintenance where commands and diffs remain inspectable
  • Teams prepared to sandbox agent access and verify every external effect

What to measure

  • Correctness, diff quality, test coverage, and reviewer effort
  • Repository, shell, browser, network, credential, and secret boundaries
  • Behavior under ambiguity, failed commands, stale assumptions, and interrupted work

Decision cautions

  • Agent completion does not replace code review, testing, or deployment controls.
  • Broad repository and tool permissions can turn a coding mistake into an external change.
  • Product surfaces and branding around Devin and related desktop tools can evolve.

Version · v4.3.4-indexnow-root-proof

Latest releases

IndexNow root-proof request compatibility

After v4.3.3, the exact root-level {key}.txt proof returned HTTP 200, but a full request carrying keyLocation still returned HTTP 403; a minimal homepage request with the same production key and no keyLocation returned HTTP 202. This release omits that field, while the automatic full run and idempotent rerun remain deployment checks.

IndexNow key-proof compatibility

Changed IndexNow verification to the official root-level {key}.txt convention after the first production notification returned HTTP 403; revalidation remains pending, while the website, sitemaps, and Bing sitemap processing are unaffected.

Bing sitemap discovery and IndexNow change notifications

Prepared canonical sitemap discovery for Bing and added automatic IndexNow change notifications while keeping segmented sitemaps authoritative and making no claim that a notified URL has been crawled or indexed.
